This course involved technical writing, audience research and analysis, document usability, page layout, document design, visual information, and product oriented communication. The textbook used was A Concise Guide to Technical Communication, by Laura J. Gurak and John M. Lannon. Microsoft Publisher was used to create graphical documents.

SuperVanilla

Memo

In this scenario, a dangerous product needs to be recalled, and the firm that the student works for has been contracted by the CDC to design informational flyers for the local community. Information about the product, SuperVanilla artificial vanilla extract, is provided. The student must determine from this the target audience and report the analysis and present design ideas to their project manager at the firm.

Flyer

A dangerous product needs to be recalled. The highest-risk audience must be reached and they must be able to clearly, easily, and quickly understand the information.

Newspaper Media Campaign

Memo 1

In this scenario, America is under threat of a radiological bomb attack, and the company the student works for has developed a new drug that treats radiation sickness. The government shows interest, the company stock soars, and they spend millions to perfect the drug. However, the government only orders 100,000 doses and the company stock plumments. The company authorizes a media campaign and the student is instructed to make a full page ad for the Wall Street Journal and a full page ad for Mother Jones Magazine.

The student must determine the target audiences of these publications, report a detailed analysis, and present design ideas to their project manager at the company.

Technical Article Summary

The purpose of this project was to take a technical article written in a journal of the student's field and summarize the article in language suitable for a general audience.

In this scenario, spam has become a big problem at the office. A solution to the problem needs to be developed along with clear understandable instructions. This solution must be made into a flyer for office employees to see. An analysis of the audience of office workers must be done to develop a proper document.

The flyer must present a solution to the problem in clear understandable instructions for office employees to see.

Students were to create an informational presentation of something from the student's field. The presentation should be made to address a general audience, take 5 minutes exactly, and have around 6 slides.
